No matter how much time you have to give, there’s an opportunity for you.
Join more than 100,000 volunteers from all over the UK who make a real difference to the experiences that we offer to girls and young women.
Our adult volunteers do amazing things – some of which might surprise you. You could find yourself white water rafting, training Guiding Leaders overseas, attending fellow Leaders weddings, site seeing with your new Guiding Bestie, handling wild animals, camping under the stars, the list is endless!
Volunteering with us isn’t just about campfires and helping young members to get their next badge – although those are special moments that we all share. It’s about empowering everyone from the youngest Rainbows to the oldest of Leaders and giving them new experiences. It’s being a role model and helping everyone to realise their full potential. It’s sharing and developing your skills.
In Cleveland adult members have travelled internationally, organised events, attended UK camps, filed unit accounts, and even just helped occassionally sharing their skills. We have a role for everyone!
- Adult volunteers bring their professional and personal experience, a specific skill or simply just their enthusiasm – you have so much to share with girls and young women in guiding. Whether you’ve been involved in guiding before or you are completely new to us, you’ll feel proud to watch every member grow through guiding.
- You choose the volunteer role that matches your skills and time. Then we’ll help you build skills with amazing training opportunities suited to your role. You can train to become a leader, become a trained first aider, get qualified for outdoor activities such as climbing and kayaking and so much more all whilst making a new set of lifelong friends.

Volunteer with girls at unit meetings
At the heart of guiding are the unit meetings that girls go along to regularly. Volunteering at unit meetings means getting stuck in, meeting new people and running activities that help girls know they can do anything. You’ll volunteer directly with young people and can choose to work with girls of different age groups between 4 and 18 years in Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or Rangers. Unit meetings are usually once a week for upto two hours depending on the section!
Roles include:
Unit helper
Lots of new volunteers start out as a helper at regular unit meetings. You’ll work alongside other volunteers to give girls fun, friendship, challenge and adventure. There’s no responsibility for planning in this role but you’ll be the extra pair of hands needed to make unit meetings happen.

Unit leader
As unit leader, you’ll run the unit, lead a team of volunteers, and plan and deliver a programme of awesome activities. If you’d like to become a leader, you’ll be supported to complete our leader development programme. You’ll have training on everything from planning activities to child safety.

Taking on a supporting role in units or behind the scenes
There are plenty of ways you can still make an impact in a supporting role, whether that’s digitally or on an ad-hoc basis. No commitment is too small – every role is vital to running our charity.
These roles are perfect for you if you can’t give time every week, want to help casually or are keen to share a specific skill or passion. This can be anything from camping or football through to photography or running your own business!
